Moving head lights explained

Wash, spot/profile, beam, and hybrid labels describe optical jobs, not interchangeable promises. A wash usually favors soft coverage, a spot or profile controllable image and texture, and a beam a narrow high-intensity field; real products combine features and vary widely. Choose from the brief, photometrics, optics, movement, control footprint, power, noise, environment, and safe eye lines, then build named positions instead of aimless motion.

Planning and browser practice are references, not show approval. Verify fixture manuals, circuit ratings, hanging limits, venue rules, and local code with a qualified person.

01 · Read the brief

Start with the brief and the system.

What triggered this guide

You have movers and they mostly just swing around.

The decision to make

Understand the moving head families and what they are each good for.

02 · Use the method

Brief it, change one variable, prove the result.

Design method

Write one observable job and the audience, camera, subject, or document that will prove it. Confirm the authorized system limits. Change one controllable variable, compare it with the prior state from the position that matters, then record both the result and the handoff.

Safety boundary

A browser page or calculator cannot authorize electrical, structural, rigging, access, fire, laser, atmospheric-effect, or work-at-height decisions. Stop and use fixture documentation, venue procedure, local requirements, and the qualified person responsible for the actual system.

03 · Work the order

Work from evidence to handoff.

  1. 1

Read the manufacturer photometric, optical, movement, noise, power, mounting, safety, and DMX-mode documentation before assigning a family label.

Proof before the next move: The proposed job is supported by the specific fixture data rather than by “wash,” “spot,” “beam,” or “hybrid” on the case.

  2. 2

Define the job: subject coverage, texture or framing, aerial or scenic effect, movement, camera use, throw, and environmental limits.

Proof before the next move: One sentence explains why this optical system and position solve the brief better than the available alternatives.

  3. 3

Verify footprint and mode, including coarse/fine movement, color, focus, zoom, framing, effects, and any parameters the show file must own.

Proof before the next move: Fixture display, console profile, occupied range, and paperwork name the same mode and respond parameter by parameter.

  4. 4

Have authorized people hang, secure, power, address, and establish movement clearance; then inspect every pan/tilt extreme and audience or performer eye line.

Proof before the next move: The full movement envelope clears structure, scenery, cable, people, and prohibited direct viewing positions.

  5. 5

Aim from the design position and store clearly labeled references for real marks, using console-specific reference behavior.

Proof before the next move: Each reference lands on its named mark after the programmer is cleared and after approach from different pan/tilt directions.

  6. 6

Rehearse transitions at show speed, test recovery after a moved fixture or changed mark, and keep a safe stop or blackout state available.

Proof before the next move: Motion serves a called moment, ends where expected, and can be stopped without losing required visibility.

04 · Choose a rep

Practise the exact decision.

Practise what you just read

Build the comparison, then bring the evidence to the room.

Use the free stage to compare one visual decision. A browser score cannot approve a real show, camera result, rig, or safety decision.

The free stage and calculator need no signup. Protected practice may ask you to sign in; saving remains optional.

05 · Resolve the edges

Questions

Spot or wash for a small stage?

Begin with the job, throw, coverage, photometrics, available positions, noise, camera, and safe eye lines. A wash may fit broad coverage; a spot or profile may fit controlled shape; a hybrid may cover several needs with tradeoffs. Demo the exact unit in the room before buying.

Why do beams look great in videos and disappointing in my room?

Aerial visibility depends on particles in the air, viewing angle, output, contrast, and exposure. Without approved atmosphere, a narrow beam can still illuminate a target or create a visible scenic result, but the floating shaft seen in promotional footage may largely disappear. Never add haze without the venue procedure.
